San Juan County, in partnership with Nuka Research & Planning Group LLC and the UW Puget Sound Institute Salish Sea Modeling Center, has completed the Vessel Drift and Response Analysis for the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Southern Strait of Georgia. This study estimates the probability that an emergency response towing vessel stationed in the Salish Sea could prevent a disabled vessel from grounding and potentially causing an oil spill in Haro Strait and Boundary Pass. It extends the vessel drift and response analysis conducted by Nuka for the west coast of Canada to our inland waters.

This analysis further supports the strategies and informs discussions of oil spill prevention mitigation measures in these waters.
