Philip K. Traini, 38, of Friday Harbor, has been charged with burglary in the first degree for domestic assault, assault in violation of a protection order and obstructing a law enforcement officer in San Juan County Superior Court.

A deputy was dispatched to a reported assault at the intersection of Park Street and Marguerite Place North on Feb. 2 in Friday Harbor. According to documents filed on Feb. 5, the victim invited Traini over to her house. A no-contact order had previously been issued to Traini and he was supposed to stay 1,000 feet away from the victim’s address.

Traini and the victim allegedly began to argue and he grabbed her by the lower jaw and shoved her to the bed, she said. According to the probable cause statement, Traini reportedly said that he could strangle her and no one would hear her scream. The victim denied that any other assault had occurred.

When the deputy arrived, he saw a man in a plaid shirt take off running. The deputy was approached by the victim, who identified Traini as the man who fled. A chase ensued, during which the deputy followed Traini in his patrol vehicle and then chased him by foot.Traini eluded the deputy. Afterward, the victim agreed to provide a statement. Traini was arrested on Feb. 4 and his arraignment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 11.

Burglary in the first degree is when a person enters a property with intent to commit a crime, remains unlawfully in a building and the perpetrator is armed with a deadly weapon or assaults someone.

Traini’s criminal history includes criminal trespass in the second degree, four separate counts of driving with a license suspended or revoked in the third degree, use of drug paraphernalia, hit-and-run of an unattended vehicle, minor in possession and/or consumption, driving under the influence and marijuana possession.
