The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Dec. 25

• Deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute in Friday Harbor. After gathering statements, one person was arrested and booked into jail for fourth-degree domestic violence assault.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a theft that had occurred in October.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for crossing the center line and driving into the deputy’s lane of travel. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence.

• A Lopez deputy was contacted to check on an old, abandoned vehicle. The owner was located from receipts in the vehicle, which had simply run out of gas.

Dec. 26

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 62 mph in a 45 mph speed zone.

• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to look for an unwanted person the caller believed might be on the island. The person was not located, and the caller was not contacted by them.

• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to conduct a welfare check. The deputy located the person and took them to the medical center for further evaluation.

Dec. 27

• A Lopez deputy assisted Washington State Police with a mainland hit-and-run collision investigation.

• A deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle in Eastsound for having an expired registration. It was discovered the vehicle had someone else’s vehicle tab on the license plate. The driver was issued tickets for having an expired registration and for not having insurance. An investigation into the false tab continues.

• San Juan County Sheriff personnel responded to a report of a deceased person who had washed ashore on Sucia Island. The deceased has yet to be identified and the case is under further investigation.

• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding and warned them about failing to carry registration in the vehicle.

• A deputy was dispatched to a domestic incident in the Friday Harbor area. The involved people were contacted and a report was taken.

Dec. 28

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a person taking a shopping cart and rearranging landscaping. The subject was trespassed from two locations.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped a driver for not wearing a seat belt. The driver was issued a citation for not wearing a seat belt and for not having insurance.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of found property. The owner was located and arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

• A deputy was dispatched to an order violation in the Friday Harbor area.

• A deputy on Orcas issued a driver a citation for speeding 55 mph in a 35 mph zone and for failing to renew the vehicle’s registration, which was expired more than two months.

Dec. 29

• An Orcas deputy issued a driver on Crow Valley Road a citation for driving 53 mph in a 35 mph zone and a verbal warning for not having proof of liability insurance.

• Deputies on San Juan stopped a driver for not having a valid driver’s license and for having an outstanding warrant. The driver was arrested on both the warrant and for possession of a controlled substance. The driver was also issued a citation for not having a valid operator’s license or insurance.

• A Lopez deputy discovered fresh damage to a commercial driveway gate. The buildings within the perimeter were checked and found secure. A responsible party was contacted and arrangements made to secure the premises.

• A Lopez resident reported the theft of an outboard motor. The theft occurred within the past month.

• A deputy on Orcas issued a driver a citation for speeding 48 mph in a 35 mph zone; for failing to renew the car’s registration (expired more than two months); for not having proof of insurance; and for not having a valid driver’s license.

• A deputy was dispatched to a report of a domestic dispute on San Juan.

Dec. 30

• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to an assault that occurred on Lopez. The investigation continues.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of malicious mischief.

Dec. 31

• An Orcas deputy took a report about a vessel attached to a private mooring buoy. The deputy learned that the vessel had been adrift and secured to the buoy by a good Samaritan. The owner of the vessel had previously been contacted but had not rectified the situation.

• More than 30 traffic stops were performed by San Juan County deputies between 8 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2019 and 2 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2020.
