San Juan County Councilman Rick Hughes is warning islanders that illegal sandwich boards in Eastsound will soon be removed.
“There are a lot of signs out there that are illegal and we’ve had many, many complaints about it,” he said. “This is a small thing we can do to police ourselves. When people start taking advantage of this, it just means more regulation.”
According to county code, the only signs allowed in Eastsound must be on private land. They cannot be on sidewalks or the public right of way. The only exemption for this rule is signage for non-profit events.
Code enforcement staff will tag and remove any sign on the public right of way in the next 30 days. The signs will be taken to Friday Harbor.
