When an Orcas Island fifth grader noticed the school’s gym equipment needed freshening up, she immediately started brainstorming.
Isabella Douglas spent hours baking cookies, muffins, banana bread and donuts to sell in front of Island Market on May 21. Her friends Diego Lago, Maddox Davis and Logan Jones also pitched in some sweet treats. Lago helped her sell the goods as well.
The Orcas Parent Teacher Student Association agreed to match the funds that the two students raised. At the end of the day, they brought in about $500. Douglas then chipped in some of her own savings and sold the remaining baked goods door to door in her neighborhood.
Combined with the donation from PTSA, the elementary school is receiving $1200 for new mats, jump ropes, balls and more for its physical education classes.
