The San Juan County Sheriff’s responded to the following calls.

July 28

• A Lopez deputy stopped and ticketed a driver for speeding, 53 mph in a 35 mph zone on Fisherman Bay Road.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a callback about a possible order violation. After reading the order and speaking with the protected party it was found that no crime had been committed.

• A Lopez resident turned in a backpack that was found laying along Ferry Road. The backpack is being held pending the identification of the rightful owner.

• A deputy conducted a traffic stop on Orcas Road. The driver was given a warning for speeding and a citation for not having proof of insurance.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of trespassing at the Trout Lake Reservoir. The subjects were identified and were issued trespassing letters.

• A deputy stopped a motorist in the Lopez Village after he saw her speeding on Fisherman Bay Road. The deputy issued the driver a ticket for having an expired vehicle registration and gave her a verbal warning for speeding. The vehicle registration was expired for over a year.

• A Lopez deputy stopped a motorist in the 1400 block of Fisherman Bay Road after he saw him speeding. The deputy issued the driver a speeding ticket for traveling 38mph in a 25 mph zone.

• Deputies responded to a Lopez residence for a trouble-unknown call that involved what sounded like a caller was potentially in danger. It was determined that everyone at the residence where the 911 call originated was okay and that the call was accidental.

• Lopez deputies went to the area of Weeks Point Way for a welfare check. The caller reported seeing two males on the beach who appeared to be hallucinating. The deputies were able to locate one of the individuals and determined that he was okay.

• San Juan deputies stopped and issued a motorist a citation for speeding 41 mph in a 20 mph and a warning regarding their expired proof of insurance.

• A Lopez deputy received a dog that was found in Lopez Village and immediately returned it to the owner.

July 29

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a non-injury accident.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of vandalism at Friday Harbor Elementary School. Fingerprints were lifted from the scene and sent to the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory for examination.

•A deputy conducted a traffic stop on Orcas Road and found the driver had a suspended license. The driver was issued a citation for speeding, 51 mph in a posted 40 mph zone, and informed that the courts would be contacting them about driving on a suspended license.

• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of illegal dumping on private property near View Road and Osprey Lane. An investigation provided no suspects.

• A visitor on Lopez called about a dog roaming near Watmough Bay. Deputies notified the owner of their dog’s whereabouts.

• An Orcas deputy investigated an allegation of animal abuse. The investigation found no credible evidence of abuse and no crime committed. A report was authored for documentation of the allegations.

• A Lopez resident called about suspicious vehicles near a boat launch. The owners were contacted by phone and identified as outer-island residents.

• A terminally ill person passed away on Lopez.

• An Orcas deputy towed and impounded a vehicle blocking traffic on the 400 block of Main Street.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a citizen dispute. The investigation revealed there was no crime committed.

• San Juan deputies were contacted by a father who reported a possible out-of-state contact order violation. The caller was advised to report the possible violation to the other party’s local agency.

• Deputies on Orcas were dispatched to a kayaker in distress on Blakely. The kayaker was located and found to be deceased due to injuries received from a fall while climbing Blind Bluff. The corner was contacted and an investigation was completed.

• A Lopez deputy assisted a citizen in obtaining a lost passport and other important documentation.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued a citation for not having insurance.

• Deputies on Orcas responded to a report of domestic assault. One of the involved parties was arrested for domestic violence assault in the fourth degree.

July 30

• The reporting deputy was dispatched to an unwanted person in the Friday Harbor area. When the deputy arrived, the person was no longer in the area. Trespass letters for two locations were signed and would be served.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a person with a knife, stabbing pallets at a local business. When deputies arrived on the scene they learned the business personnel wished to have the man trespassed from the business. A trespass letter was issued and the man left the property.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a dog left in a vehicle on a hot day and issued the owner a citation for leaving a dog in an unattended vehicle.

• A deputy on San Juan took a call from a person who had been notified of some suspicious activity with their bank account. The reporting party did not want to pursue any law enforcement action.

• When a deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a theft, they learned it was not a theft, but a case of miscommunication.

• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle because the registered owner had a suspended driver’s license. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license – second degree.

• A motorist suspected of driving with a suspended license was stopped by a San Juan deputy and arrested for driving with a suspended license – third degree.

• A San Juan deputy recovered multiple debit cards and identification cards left at a local business and entered them into evidence.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped a motorist for driving with a suspended license. Probable cause was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for a charging decision.

July 31

• San Juan deputies responded to an altercation outside of a bar. Numerous people had left the area prior to the arrival of the deputies and victims did not wish to pursue the case. The suspect was trespassed from the bar and the case is still under investigation.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of an order violation. After investigation, it appeared no violation occurred.

• An Orcas deputy took a report of a theft of a delivery package containing approximately $50.00 worth of make-up from a mailbox near Orcas Road and Indralaya Road. Currently, there is no information about a suspect or any investigative leads.

• A deputy on San Juan took a report of a lost drone. The item was listed as missing.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of found property and the items were entered into evidence for safekeeping.

• A Lopez deputy was called to help identify the owner of a boat that took possession of a marina slip without a reservation or payment. Information was provided to management for them to follow up.

• A Lopez deputy received an anonymous traffic complaint of a racing-style motorcycle traveling south on Mud Bay Road. As the deputy came into the area, a similar motorcycle was seen going north at normal speeds. The driver stopped to talk to the deputy about safe motorcycle operation. No action was taken.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding on Tucker Avenue and issued them a citation for traveling 48 mph in a 25 mph speed zone.

• A deputy on San Juan observed a double-parked vehicle on Guard Street with tabs that expired over six months ago. The vehicle was posted for 24-hour removal and the vehicle’s owner received a citation for double parking.

• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for erratic driving and for driving left of center. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and received a citation for driving left of center.

Aug. 1

• A Lopez deputy was called to check on suspicious circumstances occurring at Spencer Spit State Park. The issue was resolved by park staff before the deputy arrived.

• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of an assault and trespassing. The incident was investigated and charges of probable cause for assault – fourth degree; assault – fourth-degree domestic violence, and first-degree trespassing were forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for charging decision.

• A Lopez resident turned in a found wallet to the sheriff’s office just in time for its owner to come looking for it. The owner was very relieved to get it back with all its contents intact.

• A Lopez deputy took a fraud report from a local resident about an online scam.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a structure fire. The caller was found to be in crisis and was confrontational with the responding deputy. After 3.5 hours, a deputy convinced the caller to discard a knife they were holding, and the caller was taken to the hospital for treatment.

• A Lopez deputy received a report of vehicles speeding and passing in a no-passing zone on Fisherman Bay Rd.

• On Lopez, a deputy was sent to check on the sound of possible explosions in the area of the gravel pit. A group of target shooters was contacted, who said they had been shooting some large caliber weapons.

Aug. 2

• An Orcas deputy conducted an area check at the Westsound County Dock and found a vessel at the dock which had been issued numerous citations for unlawful overnight moorage in the past. The deputy issued the vessel’s owner yet another citation for the same offense.

• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a caller in crisis who needed someone to talk to. The deputy met with the caller and spoke with them at length. They were able to work through the crisis, advised of resources for the future, and given a ride home.

• A deputy responded to a single-vehicle accident with no injuries on Orcas Road. Orcas Fire and EMS conducted traffic control until the vehicle could be towed, and checked the vehicle’s driver, who had no injuries.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor was contacted about a bike that was found. The bike was entered into evidence.

• A San Juan deputy took possession of a found backpack and entered it into the evidence system.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor was contacted by U.S. Marshals for assistance in locating a wanted person. The deputy located the person; arrested him on the warrant without incident; and booked him into jail to await a warrant extradition hearing.

• The Orcas Sheriff’s Office and fire department personnel responded to a report of a single-vehicle injury collision that occurred on private property. The driver and passenger suffered only minor injuries, and the owner arranged to have the vehicle towed.

• A San Juan deputy took a report of harassment by a domestic partner. No crime was committed, and the deputy performed a stand-by detail to assure the peace.

• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a death investigation.

• A deputy on San Juan was flagged down and told of a missing juvenile. A search party was formed and located the juvenile who was reunited with the parent.

• The reporting deputy received an item as found property and secured it in the evidence room.

Aug. 3

• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop near the ferry landing and issued the driver a citation for speeding, 50 mph in a posted 40 mph zone. The driver had been pulled over and warned for speeding a month before.

• The reporting deputy was contacted in reference to a domestic incident on San Juan. The person said the incident was verbal only but wanted it documented.

• A deputy was contacted in reference to a report of fraud in the San Juan area. The person reported an item that was ordered on the Internet had been forwarded to another address.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a driver who was not wearing a safety belt. The driver was issued a citation for failing to obtain a Washington State driver’s license and a warning for improper use of a safety belt.

• A Lopez deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle that was drifting over the centerline. The driver, not intoxicated, claimed they had a hyper dog that needed to urinate, which distracted them. The driver was given a warning for driving left-of-center, and the dog safely made it to a grass patch during the stop.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a complaint about a suspicious person. The reporting person said they saw a man digging in an odd spot. It was determined the person was hired by the county to eliminate noxious weeds. The deputy thanked the man for removing the pernicious weeds.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of found property. The owner was not able to be located and the property was entered into evidence.

• A San Juan deputy the driver of a vehicle for traveling 68 mph on Beaverton Valley Road, in a 45 mph speed zone. The driver was issued citations for speeding and for having an expired registration.

• A San Juan deputy took possession of a found credit card and entered it into evidence.

• An Orcas deputy conducted an area check at the Westsound County Dock about a vessel at the dock that had been issued numerous infractions for unlawful overnight moorage before. The deputy issued the vessel’s owner yet another citation.

• A San Juan deputy responded to a single-vehicle, non-injury collision near the intersection of West Valley Road and Roche Harbor Road. No injuries or impairment were found, and the vehicle was towed.

Aug. 4

• Orcas deputies responded to a call about several men with guns near Guthrie Cove. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subjects. No crime was committed, and an incident report was authored.

• San Juan deputies responded to a domestic disturbance. An investigation determined no crime had taken place and one party was provided with a courtesy transport into town and a report was filed.
