The day before the sugar-laden holiday of Halloween, Marny Gaylord’s fourth grade class participated in the Pumpkin Run which has become a tradition at Orcas Elementary.

By running twice around the back field, about the equivalent of a mile, students each earned a personal pumpkin.

The Pumpkin Run was started by P.E. teacher Dan Drake over four years ago. About 140 kids, more than half the school, participated this year.

200 pumpkins were donated by Rhonda Barbieri of La Campesina Project and will be used in Mandy Randolph’s Farm to Cafeteria class Monday, Nov. 2 to make pumpkin pie.
