The San Juan Nature Institute will be offering an adult field workshop entitled “Lichens of Turtleback” on Saturday, Sept. 13 at a time to be determined.
Western Washington University instructor Dr. Fred Rhoades will introduce lichen biology and ecology and review the features useful in identifying genera and species. Participants will walk up Turtleback Mountain to investigate lichen habitats in the woods and bluffs.
The list of species found will represent the starting point of a project to build a complete lichen inventory for the San Juan County Land Bank. The cost is $55 for the general public and $40 for Beach Watchers and Naturalists.
Attendees are asked to bring a 10x hand lens and 8 ½ x 11 paper sheets to make collecting packets for voucher specimens. Clock hours are available for teachers. Those interested may register at www.sjnature.org or by calling 378-3646.
