Lopez drug arrest reveals illegal firearm | San Juan County Sheriff’s log

A Lopez Island man who had a pistol in the pocket of his pants when he was arrested on felony-drug charges at a Friday Harbor apartment in November was sentenced to serve 15 days in jail for a felony weapons offense.

On April 30, William John Yukluk, 21, who pleaded guilty in San Juan County Superior Court to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in mid-March, and was ordered to serve 15 days in jail, and to pay $1,400 in fines and fees. He will be allowed to serve 15 days on work crew in lieu of jail under the sentence handed down by Judge Don Eaton.

Convicted five years ago of felony fraud, Yukluk was prohibited from carrying a firearm as a result of that conviction.

According to court documents, Yukluk took a .22 caliber revolver from his father without permission and reportedly told deputies at the time of his arrest that he carried it for protection. The handgun was unloaded at that time.

In addition to the firearm offense, Yukluk was initially charged with a pair of felony drug offenses, delivery of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. Former Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock later ruled any drug-related evidence collected at the time of his arrest could not be used at trial, and those charges were dropped.

A Class C felony, unlawful possession of a firearm carries maximum penalties of five year in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both; however, the standard range of sentencing set by the state is 1-3 months in jail.
