Voters filled the conference room at Eastsound Fire Station for a candidate forum presented by the San Juan County League of Women Voters on Oct. 4.

The two men running for Congressional District #2, Representative Rick Larsen and his opponent Marc Hennemann, began the forum by introducing themselves and answering questions. Senator Kevin Ranker was unable to attend, but a letter was read in his stead, and his opponent Daniel Miller read a statement as well.

Finally, the four candidates for San Juan County Council went before the audience. For District #1: incumbent Bob Jarman and Bill Watson; and District #2: Michael Durland and incumbent Rick Hughes.

Hennemann, who had visited Orcas just once before, introduced himself as a father, grandfather and Air Force veteran.

“I am not a professional politician,” said Hennemann. “I have the experience, I have the knowledge and I have the background.”

Larsen said he was born in Arlington and raised by parents who were heavily involved in the community.

His political history began when he served on the Snohomish County Council, where he ultimately became the chairman.

“I’d like the opportunity to continue the job I’m doing,” said Larsen, who noted he spent 16 years working to get a road on Cattle Point on San Juan Island.

He also mentioned his involvement in the $2 million renovation coming to the Orcas Island Airport.

Audience member Ed Sutton questioned Hennemann about what why he feels he would make a good Congressman in spite of his lack of political experience.

Hennemann said that he went to George Washington University, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and attended The University of Oklahoma, where he earned a master’s degree in public administration.
