Marlyn (Evonne Myers) Myers was born on Oct. 14, 1937 to Lyman and Dorothy (Knauss) Myers in Caldwell, Idaho. She died Aug. 21, 2016 on Orcas Island, Wash.
She was the daughter of a minister who served numerous small churches in Washington and Oregon. Her most memorable time was on the Oregon coast where he was pastor to congregations in Yachats and Florence at the start of the war.
She graduated high school in 1955 in Salem, Ore. and attended college in Portland where she majored in history with interests in music and drama. She met her husband, Don Myers, in college and they married in 1958. She got her master’s degree in education and went on to teach high school. Her love of history and her ability to make it live by telling stories was a theme of her teaching career. She interrupted her teaching career to raise an adopted son, David.
Her husband’s career as a scientist led them to jobs in Palo Alto, California and Dallas, Texas, before returning to Oregon where they settled in Oakland, Ore. She joined her husband in the family business for a number of years before returning to the classroom. Marlyn was chairman of the historic commission in the historic town of Oakland for 10 years during which time she championed the preservation of the significant history of that area. After retirement she moved with her husband to Orcas Island, where they bought a waterfront lot and with their own hands built their retirement home overlooking Eastsound. Her community activities included serving as president of the garden club and volunteering at the Glenwood Springs hatchery.
She was pre-deceased by her son, David. She died at home overlooking Eastsound, after a two-year battle with ovarian cancer. A celebration of her life will be held Oct. 1 in Benson Hall at the Episcopal Church in Eastsound at 11 a.m.
