San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

May 19: A failure to buckle up led to the arrest of a Lopez Island woman for driving with a suspended license following a mid-afternoon traffic stop near the intersection of Fisherman Bay and Hummel Lake roads. The 55-year-old, who was ticketed for driving without a seat belt and for driving without proof of insurance, was pulled over shortly after 2 p.m.

May 23: The whereabouts of a Florida man were still unknown three days after he pitched at tent at Lopez Island’s Odlin Park and then apparently vanished. The 36-year-old, who hadn’t yet paid for the campsite, left behind a tent, a sleeping bag and an assortment of personal belongings, including a letter bearing his name.

May 26: A trio of warrants led to an early evening arrest of an Orcas Island man who successfully eluded capture by a pair of deputies earlier in the day. The 27-year-old was taken into custody after running into a road block while trying to leave a friend’s home on Green Cow Lane at about 6:45 p.m. He ran into the brush and escaped pursuit when two deputies showed up at the friend’s home while he was outside washing his car earlier in the day.

• A batch of warrants led to the arrest of a Bainbridge Island man by a US Coast Guard crew. The 54-year-old, who the federal officers turned over to local authorities, is reportedly wanted on four arrest warrants.

May 28: A 17-year-old Orcas Island boy was arrested on alcohol-related charges after he reportedly was found taking a late-night snooze inside his vehicle in the parking lot of Buck Park. The boy, who reportedly had a pack of cigarettes on him at the time, was taken into custody at about 11:30 p.m., and later released to his parents.

May 27: An iPad computer vanished from the backpack of an Orcas Island school during an apparent theft while classes were in session. Valued at $1,200, the iPad is reportedly equipped with a GPS tracking device that will signal its location if it’s used to access the Internet.

• A 69-year-old Friday Harbor woman and a friend, both out on a stroll, escaped unharmed after reportedly being charged by a pair of pit bulls in a mid-morning melee on Malcolm Street. The dogs were eventually restrained by their owner, identified as a 57-year-old woman, shortly after charging at the two as they walked past the woman’s home.

May 30: A call about a trespasser led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man for DUI following a late-night traffic stop in the driveway of the man’s Cayou Valley Road home. The 59-year-old reportedly was intoxicated when he drove to the home of a neighbor, with whom he reportedly had an argument, and was then spotted by a deputy while driving to his Deer Harbor home.

May 31: A large number of “flagstones” and a copper fire-pit vanished from the patio of an Orcas Island home in an apparent case of theft. The owner of the home, a 38-year-old Seattle man, reportedly discovered various belongings missing from his patio during a recent visit to his Raccoon Point property.

June 1: An Orcas Island man was arrested on alcohol-related charges following a late-night argument with a female acquaintance, which took place inside the man’s sedan, in the parking lot of an Eastsound grocery store. The engine was running and the sedan’s backup lights were engaged when a deputy confronted the 49-year-old, who reportedly was behind wheel, and his passenger at about 10 p.m. The man is charged with being in physical control of a vehicle while intoxicated.

June 2: A 70-year-old Seattle man was bit on the arm by a Labrador during an ill-fated trip onboard a mid-morning ferry bound for Friday Harbor. The man was walking in between a row of vehicles when the 7-year-old Lab, reportedly a first-time ferry traveler, stuck its head outside an open car window and bit the man on the upper arm. Its owner, a woman from California, claims the dog has never bitten anyone before.

June 3: A San Juan Island man suspects that a 47-year-old neighbor, convicted recently of a series of burglaries and thefts, is responsible for the disappearance of three radiators and an equal number of alternators from various autos stored at his property on Moon Ridge Road. The amount of restitution the 47-year-old will be ordered to pay has yet to be determined.

June 4: Allegations of assault prompted an inter-island investigation after a Friday Harbor girl accused her sweetheart’s ex-girlfriend, who lives on Orcas, of punching her. The alleged assailant reportedly was to be questioned about the incident by deputies based on Orcas.

June 6: An Orcas Island woman whose two-door sedan tumbled over the side of the road in the 7900 block of Orcas Road escaped the early morning single-car rollover without serious injury. The 20-year-old, northbound on Orcas Road, reportedly hit the brakes in a patch of loose gravel at a bend in the rode, spun 180 degrees, slid about 35 feet and then rolled over an embankment. The automobile landed in the embankment on the driver’s side.

• Someone swiped information off an Orcas Island man’s credit card and used it online to purchase $233 worth of clothing. The 67-year-old noted that the clothing company, Zappos, would tell him only that the clothing was intended for an address in Alabama and that it would try to stop the shipment. The man’s account reportedly was credited against the fraudulent purchase.

• A San Juan Island woman claims someone got her debit card and used it twice to withdraw cash from two ATMs in town in an apparent case of theft. A total of $706 reportedly was snatched out of the 63-year-old’s account.

• A Friday Harbor woman was ticketed for negligent driving following a near head-on collision with a deputy traveling in the opposite direction near the intersection of Halverson and Roche Harbor Roads. The 70-year-old, who was pulled over at about 10 p.m., reportedly continued weaving in-and-out of the northbound lane of traffic even after the near miss.

June 7: Neighborhood kids, or late-night party-goers – a Friday Harbor man believes either is likely responsible for knocking over three of the five decorative posts outside his C Street apartments, and for a failed attempt to uproot the other two. The 62-year-old claims it’s not the first time that the four-foot tall posts, valued together at $300, have been knocked over or damaged.

June 8: A San Juan Island teen accused of trying to heist a pair of beverages from a Friday Harbor grocery store was arrested for shoplifting following an apparent noontime theft. The 15-year-old, unidentified by name or gender, allegedly snatched an energy drink and container of peach tea, together valued at $5, was detained by several store employees, and then taken into custody by a deputy shortly before 1 p.m. The teen was later released to return to school.

• A pair of fishing poles, equipped with reels, vanished from a boat belonging to an Olympia man in an apparent late-night theft at the Port of Friday Harbor. The 52-year-old believes someone swiped the poles from the boat sometime between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., while he was docked at the marina.
