On Tuesday, June 26, 10:53 a.m., Orcas Island Fire and Rescue responded with eight apparatus and 14 emergency responders to the Hemlock neighborhood in Eastsound for the report of a structure fire.

On location, firefighters found a shed with an exterior, attached chicken coop involved in fire. Neighbors used a garden hose to initially control the flames until OIFR units arrived and fully extinguished the fire preventing significant damage to the shed.

There were no injuries and the fire appeared to be accidental in nature and was caused by an electrical short in a heat lamp appliance serving the chicken coop.

Orcas Island Fire and Rescue encourages everyone to have a safe Independence Day.  Enjoy the public fireworks displays and please be advised that personal fireworks are against the law.

OIFR thanks to our volunteers for “being there” in the time of need.
