San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
May 10: Someone took the fire extinguishers out of five school buses and discharged the contents of each onto the Orcas Island high school football field in an apparent case of vandalism and theft. A two-way radio, valued at $600, vanished from one of the buses as well, and its whereabouts remain unknown.
May 17: Allegations of assault prompted the arrest of a Lopez Island woman for DUI and reckless driving following a confrontation with the sister-in-law of a man who she was searching for. The 34-year-old, who allegedly attempted to strike the other woman after being told to leave her home, was tracked down and taken into custody at about 11:30 p.m. She is also accused of spraying and damaging the other woman’s car with gravel as she sped away from her home.
May 22: Report of a late-night disturbance at a home in the 1700 block of Bayshore Drive led to the arrest of a 19-year-old Lopez Island man on an alleged alcohol-related offense. The 19-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 1 a.m., was reportedly standing outside the home when an officer arrived at the scene.
May 23: A familiar face and three warrants led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man following a chance encounter on the road with an officer traveling in the opposite direction. The 28-year-old was pulled and taken into custody on Crescent Beach Road at about 4 p.m., shortly after crossing paths with a deputy on nearby Mount Baker Road.
May 27: An Orcas Island woman faces burglary and drug-related felony charges following an early-morning break-in and theft at an Eastsound pharmacy. The 51-year-old reportedly claims to have blacked out following a late-night excursion at a neighboring bar and knows nothing about the break-in or the theft of prescription painkillers.
May 30: A Lopez Island teen faces alcohol-related charges after he was found curled up and asleep on a deck chair of a resort in Lopez Village. The 18-year-old was taken into custody at about 1 a.m.
A Lopez Island man who reportedly was standing in the middle of the road with the keys of his pickup truck in his hand was arrested for DUI following a late night encounter with a officer on Fisherman Bay Road. The 38-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 2:30 a.m., reportedly was standing beside his pickup, with the engine off, the driver’s door open and without the headlights on, when a deputy drove up behind him.
