In spite of the windy weekend, pickleball competitors rallied for some great matches at Buck Park on Aug. 14 and 15, Orcas Rotary’s 4th Annual Pickleball Tournament raised more than $5,000, with most of the proceeds targeted for scholarships for graduating high school seniors and support for the Orcas Community Resource Center. Enthusiastic spectators kept spirits high. A good time was had by all.
On Saturday, Jill Bates and Greg Stafford won the Mixed Doubles competition. Jason Gross and Cassie Taylor won the Pickle Award for the happiest players of the day. On Sunday, Kevin and Max Lee won the Men’s Doubles. Jill Bates and Maggie Kulyk won the Women’s Doubles. The Pickle Award that day went to Jen Black for her unbridled enthusiasm. Gib Black got the Shot of the Day Award by hitting 2 ATPs (Around the Posts). Special thanks go to Jen Morris, who ran the tournament, and Christine Lee, who recorded the scores and tracked winners. Orcas Island Park and Recreation District provided the pickle balls (sanitized after every match) and were very supportive of the tournament. Orcas Village Storage at the ferry landing provided tents for the event. Island Thyme provided gifts for winners. Sponsors were foundational to the tournament’s success. Business sponsors include Doe Bay Wine Co.; Gudgell Properties, LLC; Island Hardware and Supply; Island Petroleum; Island Thyme; Orcas Food Co-op; Rainshadow Solar; and Ray’s Pharmacy. Individual sponsors include Barbara and Frank Fagan, John Fletemeyer, Linda Hamilton, Bob and Jeanne McPherson, and John Morris. Tournament Chair Linda Hamilton commented, “We are thrilled to report that we exceeded our original goal by $2,000 thanks to our supportive community!”
