Orcas Island high school and middle school students participated in the nationwide walkout event honoring the 17 victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that happened exactly one month ago in Parkland, Florida. Many community members were in attendance as well, supporting the youth in their activism.
The students lit 17 candles while reciting the Stoneman Douglas victims’ names and then listed all of the schools where a shooting has occurred since the Columbine school shooting of April 20, 1999, that left 15 dead, including the two perpetrators. The students will also be walking in the March for Our Lives rally for gun safety on March 24.
