In years past there was a friendly rivalry between women golfers on Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Islands, played out at frequent tournaments held on each of the islands. This year the tradition returns to Orcas Island on July 22. The inter-island Ladies Golf Scramble Tournament has a shot-gun start at 10:15 a.m (golfers start simultaneously at every tee on the course). Lopez hosted their own scramble earlier this summer and several golfers from Lopez and San Juan Island are expected for the Orcas tournament. All women golfers of any ability are encouraged to join in the fun.
“For newer golfers, this format is a perfect way to jump into your first tournament. Scrambles are a team sport with the emphasis on fun!” said Mary Riveland, Ladies Golf Coordinator for Orcas Island Country Golf Club. In a Scramble, all golfers play and the team chooses the best shot. Then all members of the team play from the location of the best shot, repeating this around the course. It’s a fast, fun way to play a tournament.
The day’s events include a continental breakfast, a picnic lunch at the turn, post-game wine and dessert, and prizes and awards. Prize categories include closest to pin, longest drive, and best overall score.
Players can register with Nikki Freeman, golf course manager, by calling Orcas Island Country Golf Club at 376-4400. Entry fee is $40 and includes greens fees, continental breakfast, lunch, and post-game wine and dessert, plus a chance at fabulous awards and door prizes.
