Orcas woman pleads not guilty to coin theft

Adia Hope Dolan, a 24-year-old formerly of Orcas Island, pleaded not guilty in San Juan County Superior Court on Nov. 28 to charges of residential burglary, theft in the first degree and possessing stolen property in the first degree, all class B felonies.

On Feb. 9, according to the probable cause statement, an Orcas resident reported several packages of gold and silver coins had gone missing. The gold coins’ estimated value is between $5,000-$6,000. Six silver dollars dated from the 1800s were also missing. Nothing else appeared to have been taken from the residence.

The victim reported that the only person who had access to his house was his housekeeper, who the victim identified as Dolan. The victim stated they did not believe Dolan would steal the coins.

On Feb. 11, the victim emailed the deputy, stating he had confronted Dolan, and she stated she was not aware of the missing coins and had not been in the house the month of December while the victim was out of town. The victim requested that the deputy do no further investigation regarding Dolan.

On Feb. 23, according to the probable cause statement, the victim contacted the deputy again to tell him that Dolan admitted to taking the coins and returned a gallon-size zip lock bag of them on Feb. 22. The victim also stated that Dolan said she attempted to cash them at Banner Bank’s Orcas branch.

On March 16, the deputy authored and served a search warrant on Banner Bank. Along with other evidence, he obtained video footage of Dolan parking at Banner Bank, entering the building and conducting a transaction with a bank teller on Jan. 10.

An arraignment hearing was held on Nov. 28, where Dolan, who has since moved out of state, was represented by San Juan County Defense Attorney Alex Frix. Dolan signed an extradition waiver, agreeing not to contest any effort to return to Washington. An omnibus hearing is scheduled for Dec. 19 to discuss the issues before the court.
