Washington State Ferries (WSF) management team met with their San Juan county customers aboard the ferry Evergreen State on Monday, Oct. 6 to discuss developing plans to address challenges to provide affordable, dependable ferry service in the years ahead.
Effective Sunday, Oct. 12, Washington State Ferries ended the peak season surcharge, which had been in effect since May 1. The current Fares Brochure (which is teal in color, effective May 1, 2007) gives non-peak information.
The elephant seal that came ashore was a nine-foot long sub-adult male and probably weighed 1500 to 2000 pounds, said SeaDoc Director Regional Director Joe Gaydos, who added that adult males can be 15 feet long and can weigh in at 4,000 to 5,000 pounds.
Turtleback Mountain became “ours” when the public contributed to the San Juan Preservation Trust and the county Land Bank joined forces to purchase it in the fall of 2006.
Six orcas have apparently disappeared from the Southern Resident orca pods this year, dropping the population to 83, the lowest since 2003.
