From the youngest students through high schoolers, young adults, boomers and seniors, Orcas Islanders are enjoying the produce and harvests of local agriculture.
The San Juan County Health and Community Services department is now accepting registrations for its 2009 septic tank inspection classes. Last year’s classes filled quickly and organizers maintained a lengthy waiting list for many sessions.
Flu vaccine is now available for the 2008 influenza season. People of all ages should consider flu vaccination, especially those at the highest risk: adults 50 years and older, children ages six months through 18 years, persons with chronic medical conditions, women who will be pregnant during flu season, residents of nursing homes, health care workers, out-of-home caregivers of children under six months and of persons in high-risk groups.
After some 10 years in the making, the ordinance adopting the Orcas Village Plan, as presented by County Senior Planner Colin Maycock, was basically approved by the County Council on Sept. 29. The council voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance amending the county’s Comprehensive Plan with the changes specified at the Sept. 29 meeting.
While the economy may be traveling south in a hurry, there’s no shortage of noxious weeds headed San Juan County’s way.
The days of dead zones and spotty cell phone coverage could be nearing the end.
One of the goals of the Transportation Summit was to successfully implement a green community event. Planners asked Helen Venada, Waste Reduction Coordinator for the County, to advise them on waste stream issues and following the event she offered the following “Green Report Card”:
Affordable housing and public facilities were the major concerns of the Eastsound Planning Review Committee meeting on Oct. 2. The Eastsound swale and drainage basins, as well as parking and undeveloped county properties in Eastsound were also discussed.
The San Juan County Council on Sept. 23 approved a request by the planning department which will allow – at least temporarily – the unified development code to be modified more than once a year.
At 1:45 p.m. Sept. 30, only 45 minutes after bidding began, the gavel came down and Rosario Resort & Spa was sold at auction for $5.45 million, plus the buyers’ fee.
The County Council met on Orcas Island Monday, Sept. 29, and heard at length both from applicants for a public right-of-way franchise that would start the process of authorizing a 3.5-mile water pipeline from a well in Crow Valley, and from opponents of that application. NOTE: the Council will meet to deliberate the issue on Monday, Oct. 20 at the Eastsound Fire Hall at 1 p.m.
