The Orcas Island School District (OISD) has recently strengthened its support of OASIS, the Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) school. OISD is currently accepting enrollment in the program.

The San Juan County Land Bank has purchased 39 acres of pasture land along False Bay Creek, located at the intersection of Bailer Hill Road and False Bay Drive.
The 17th Annual WildLife 100, the 100-mile, one day, three island bicycle ride, peaked on the west side of San Juan with a grand siting of Orca whales. Starting the day, after hours of rain, at 6 a.m. at WildLife Cycles in Eastsound, 14 hardy souls headed off on the first leg to Obstruction Pass, with stragglers joining in along the way. The group was near 20 when they turned around and rode for the 9:20 ferry to Lopez.
More than 50 women golfers from the San Juan Islands and from Mount Vernon gathered at Orcas Island Country Golf Club on July 22 under sunny skies to play in the inter-island Ladies Invitational Scramble golf tournament. “We are so pleased with the turnout as we revive this inter-island tradition,” said Mary Riveland, coordinator of the tournament for the Orcas club. “Next year we hope to play on all three islands.”
Iconic Pacific Northwest properties rarely come on the market, but that is about to change in a very big way. Olympus Real Estate Partners announced last week that Rosario Resort and Marina, a legendary getaway on Orcas Island, will be offered at auction on Sept. 30, 2008.

They may be retired from his business as a heavy equipment mechanic and her job of choir director and organist but they have still worked every summer for the past 10 years as campground hosts at Moran State Park.
Starting Aug. 20, Eastsound Water Users Association (EWUA) and OPALCO are working with Island Excavating on a joint project along Olga Road between Crescent Beach Road and Bromley Lane. EWUA General Manager Paul Kamin announced that EWUA is installing 3,500 feet of eight-inch water main to replace outdated three-inch pipes. OPALCO’s work involves burying powerlines and conduit underground in preparation for removing overhead service in the near future.
At the Aug. 12 County Council meeting on Orcas Island, County Senior Planner Colin Maycock asked the council to approve an ordinance adopting the Eastsound sewer plan, an update until 2023 for the County Comprehensive Plan, as required by the Growth Hearings Board’s requirements for compliance with the Growth Management Act (GMA).
The Orcas Island School District Board made quick work of momentous changes and loose ends at their special meeting on Thursday, Aug. 14.
It’s almost a done deal. But a mailing glitch that occurred when the county gave out the wrong address for written comments has resulted in the council extending the date for written public comment on the purchase of the Orcas Landing (Jacobsen) property for $2.85 million dollars, below the appraised value of $3.4 million dollars.
