Mount Vernon-Dave Quall, 40th District representative has announced his official endorsement of 40th District Senate candidate Ken Henderson. Dave Quall has been representing the 40th District for some 14 years and is now the chair the House Education Committee, which considers kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) educational policy and finance issues. Previously, Representative Quall served 38 years teaching, coaching and counseling both at Mount Vernon High School and at Skagit Valley College.
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Ferries Division asks that customers traveling to the San Juan Islands between Wednesday, July 23 and Saturday, July 26 plan ahead for extra congestion. (See Story B2).
New rules approved last week by the San Juan County Canvassing Board prohibit the use of cameras, cell phones and video recorders in the Elections office while ballots are being processed or tabulated.
The San Juan County public is invited to join in a dialogue among citizens, policy makers and transportation providers to explore economically and environmentally sustainable multimodal transportation solutions for the county. The event is planned for Sept. 17, 2008 at the San Juan County Fairgrounds.
The Orcas Island Community Foundation trustees have voted to grant the Orcas Island School District $10,000 to support the high quality education provided to our community youth. These funds are in addition to the over $100,000 that has been dedicated to the Education Initiative by generous community members. The monies will be released to the district once the final budget work has been completed and the board approves of the expenditures.

For the second time in three years San Juan County has set its sights on purchasing a waterfront parcel just west of the Orcas Island ferry landing that includes a dock, a float and 400 feet of moorage space.
At the Orcas Island School District (OISD) Board’s special budget meeting on July 15, they were faced with two sets of numbers, those recommended by the Educational Service District’s (ESD) and those proposed by the public Budget Advisory Committee (BAC). OISD Chair Janet Brownell said, “We’re closer on some numbers and respectfully disagree on others. We can look at the two numbers as options, or come to another number, but [Business Manager] Ben Thomas needs to draft a budget for the July 24 meeting.”
