Farm-to-Cafeteria is putting together a community dinner, called “Harvest Meal at School,” that will happen for the first time on March 16 at the Orcas Island School Open House.
Everyone is invited to join our talented public school students this Friday, May 16, as they show off their classrooms and some of the projects they’ve been working on throughout the school year. Student artwork, live music in the Elementary School, lantern making in the courtyard, and arts and crafts in the classrooms will be occurring. There will also be a slide show on the Cascade Creek watershed study as it enters Buck Bay. And be sure to check out the high school senior projects, including Bocce Ball lessons and Creative Writing Podcasts. Classrooms will be open to visit and school events will be occurring between 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
On April 24, The Funhouse and Camp Orkila hosted the second annual “Eighth Grade to Orkila” day. During school hours, the boys in the class, assisted by Jeff Ludwig, former Funhouse employee, and Forrest Gropp, current Funhouse teen employee, and Pete Moe, Funhouse Director, worked with Orkila counselors negotiating the high ropes course and team-building through exercises.
While boating seasons come and go, what’s remembered is the pure joy of a day on the water. “Whether it’s in a canoe or a 100-foot yacht isn’t as important as the whole experience of surrounding yourself with the natural beauty of the environment,” said Chris Wilke, director of the Clean Marina Washington Program.
Effective May 12, 2008, the Community Development and Planning Department, as directed by the Ordinance 49-2007, will begin implementing the collection of estimated Plan Review Fees at the time of Building Permit applications.
All children entering kindergarten (five years old before Sept.1st, 2008) are encouraged to attend school screening on May 14 and 15 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Orcas Island school library.

As reported in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Gabriel Mondragon, the 29-year old Orcas Island man who allegedly cut a high-voltage power line with a pole saw and lost his left arm in the process, faces 20 years in federal prison if found guilty of attempting to destroy an energy facility, which is a felony.
In 2006 San Juan County adopted an ordinance that requires certain activities to obtain a Special Event Permit. This action requires all persons/organizations wishing to engage in these types of activities to obtain a Special Event Permit.
