The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.
Sept. 21
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of trespassing and issued two people trespass notices.
• A deputy responded to a structure fire on San Juan. Someone had been living in a shed that burned; a dog died in the fire. No crime is suspected and the information was given to the San Juan County Fire Marshal.
• An Orcas deputy investigated what appeared to be a crossbow arrow in the yard of a citizen; no crime appeared to have been committed
• A San Juan deputy responded to a structure fire. While on the scene, the deputy was advised of a domestic incident occurring elsewhere on the property resulting in the arrest of one person on an out-of-county warrant, who was booked into jail pending transportation.
• On Orcas, a woman contacted the sheriff’s office to report she had lost her coin purse/wallet, a knit wallet with autumn colors.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to the theft of a beach chair from a local business. There is, however, no suspect information.
• A deputy took a report of various cards found on a street in Friday Harbor. The cards were entered into evidence as found property.
• San Juan deputies took a report of a missing person. Information was entered into the statewide database and agencies of the person’s likely destinations were notified.
• A Lopez deputy took a report of a mysterious high-pitched nocturnal squeal. The source of the squeal was believed to be an alarm or cooling system.
Sept. 22
• An Orcas deputy authored an incident report for a person who was dumping personal trash in a county trash can at the village green.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a non-injury collision on San Juan Valley Road. A driver struck a mailbox and the preliminary breath test reading on the scene was 0.309. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and hit-and-run with property damage.
• A deputy responded to a call about a dog at-large on Orcas. It was discovered that the dog had been reported at-large multiple times in the past, and enforcement options are being considered.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a citizen assist involving an elderly person who had lost their way home. With the assistance of EMS, the person’s address was determined and they were returned home safely.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for failing to transfer a title within 45 days. The driver was issued citations for failing to transfer a title, for a minor in possession of alcohol, and for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
• A deputy stopped a driver on San Juan for speeding, 85 mph in a 35-mph zone and noticed two small children in the vehicle. The driver was issued a criminal citation for two counts of reckless endangerment, a citation for speeding, and a citation for not having insurance.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a request for a welfare check. The caller said an elderly man left a voicemail on his phone asking for help. Deputies spoke with the elderly man and learned he had not called; the incident was documented.
Sept. 23
• A deputy had an abandoned vehicle towed because it was blocking traffic on an Orcas roadway.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a domestic dispute. All parties were contacted, and it was determined no crime was committed.
• A found dog was turned over to a Lopez deputy and reunited with its owner.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle because the owner had a suspended driver’s license. The driver was issued two citations: one for driving with a suspended license-3rd degree and one for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
• A Lopez resident called the sheriff’s office about a driver possibly under the influence. The driver claimed to have dropped their glasses under the seat, and no signs of intoxication were noted.
• On San Juan, a deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for failing to transfer the title. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license-3rd degree and on out-of-county warrants. The vehicle was impounded and a search warrant was executed the following day. A large quantity of suspected fentanyl was located.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of an order violation.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for driving with wheels off the roadway and driving left of center. The driver was issued citations for expired registration under two months, no insurance, driving left of center, no driver’s license on person, and failing to notify of an address change.
Sept. 24
• Lopez deputies were advised of an ongoing mechanical noise emanating from a village grocery store. A deputy had previously contacted the store manager, who has been working to diagnose and fix the issue.
• An Orcas deputy investigated a report of vandalism.
• A Lopez resident reported the theft of a battery from a moored vessel.
• A kayak was reported missing from the beach at Aleck Bay on Lopez.
• A deputy on San Juan took custody of a found cell phone and located the owner who picked it up at the sheriff’s office.
• A deputy conducted a traffic stop on Orcas and issued the driver citations for speeding and for failing to renew the vehicle’s registration expired over two months. The driver was issued also warnings for failing to transfer the title, for not having registration in the vehicle, and for a defective taillight.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a man behaving erratically. On contact, the person was found to be a known drug user. Stolen property was seized from his possession and returned to the owner.
Sept. 25
• Deputies on Orcas responded to a report of a domestic dispute. No crime had been committed, and the involved parties were separated for the night.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a two-vehicle collision. The investigation found the at-fault driver was following a vehicle in front of them too closely, a vehicle that had to stop for a trailer. The at-fault driver was issued citations for not having insurance or a driver’s license on their person.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a hit-and-run. The reporting party did not want the incident investigated but wanted to tell the sheriff’s office to ‘do their job’. The reporting party did, however, want the suspect written up for not having insurance.
• On San Juan, a deputy responded to a report of someone being followed by another vehicle. The reporting party stated they thought they had eventually lost them, and an “air tag” kept pinging their phone. A license plate number was not obtained, but a description of the vehicle was.
• A deputy on Orcas conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a citation for speeding, 54 miles per hour in a 35 miles-per-hour zone.
Sept. 26
• A deputy was contacted in reference to a civil problem. The caller believed they might have been exposed to a hazardous material situation. The deputy referred the concerned caller to other agencies.
• Found property on San Juan was turned over to a deputy who entered it into evidence for safe-keeping.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a theft of a phone. Though the incident occurred in another jurisdiction, the reporting party asked deputies to keep a lookout for their stolen phone.
• A deputy took a report of identity theft on Orcas.
• Unable to contact the original owners, deputies on Orcas took possession of some found property on two separate occasions and booked the property into the evidence room.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a vehicle theft call near Doe Bay. The vehicle was located at the ferry landing and returned to the owner. The case is ongoing.
Sept. 27
• A Lopez deputy took a report of stolen mail totaling approximately $80. The investigation is ongoing.
• A deputy was contacted about the theft of fencing from the owner’s property on San Juan. There is no suspect information at this time.
• Lopez deputies checked an unsecured home under construction for a felony suspect known to be in the area.
