More than 300 teens from all over the state gathered at Great Wolf Lodge on May 20 for the 2010 Spring Youth Prevention Forum to share ideas about reducing underage drinking and drug use, violence and other destructive behaviors.

The forum was planned as a follow-up activity for students who attended the fall 2009 Washington Prevention Summit in Yakima. At the fall summit, students were challenged to develop and implement prevention programs for their communities and then apply to attend the spring youth forum.

Teams with the highest scores on completed applications won the opportunity to showcase their projects and learn new ideas from each other at the Spring Summit. Point Blank, from Orcas High school, was one of 41 teams chosen to participate.

Point Blank members Stephanie Shaw (Vice President), Adrien Erickson, Courtney Ray, Jules Mann, Jessica Gudgell, Morgan Sabine, Annie Ryder and Tika Zbornik presented the project the group had done last fall entitled “Think About It… Is It Worth The Risk?” a play that depicts the domino effect underage drinking can have on a young person’s life. Their project also included an expert panel discussion led by community leaders in law, prevention, rescue and domestic violence. The team was among the final six chosen to compete for the grand prize.

Point Blank is a chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and practices peer to peer education, prevention, and activism.
