For property owners who pay property taxes in two installments, this year’s second installment must be postmarked or received at the County Treasurer’s office no later than the close of business on Friday, Oct. 31.
The San Juan County Treasurer collects property taxes for 43 local taxing entities in addition to the County. Only 10.5 cents of each property tax dollar go into San Juan County’s current operating revenues.
With nine days left before the deadline, the treasurer has received just 69 percent of this year’s total property taxes. By the end of the month, County Treasurer Jan Sears hopes to collect the remaining $12,447,067.14.
Sears notes that San Juan County taxpayers have among the best rates of compliance in the state but, “The big bucks always arrive at the last minute.”
Property owners who have lost their tax statement or have questions about their property taxes can contact the Treasurer’s office at 360-378-2171.
