The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
Aug. 25
• A Lopez deputy responded to a citizen assist call. A citizen was provided information regarding an ongoing neighborly conflict.
• A deputy on Lopez responded to a citizen assist call. A Lopez citizen, who is in a feud, was advised of different protection orders and alternative solutions.
• A tan canvas bag was left at the Orcas Substation. A note attached stated it was found at Waterfront Park in Eastsound on Aug. 23. The bag was booked into the property room.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a civil dispute and noted no crime was committed.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of an unwanted person, located the subject of the call, and then issued them a trespass warning letter for the property.
• San Juan deputies responded to an unknown trouble call. An investigation determined the caller was in a drug-induced crisis but wanted no help or contact from law enforcement. Mental health resources were contacted and a report was completed.
• Orcas deputies were dispatched to a harassment call.
• [Overheard on the police scanner] Dispatch was notified of a bobcat in the North Beach area of Orcas Island. The reporting party said they had the eyes on the feline at the time. When emergency services arrived, they discovered the bobcat was a standard house cat and proceeded to pet it. No further action was necessary.
Aug. 26
• A Lopez deputy was contacted regarding a citizen dispute over COVID-19 vaccinations and mask-wearing requirements on private property.
• A deputy took a report of a cold hit-and-run collision in Friday Harbor. No suspect information was available.
• Deputies on San Juan investigated a situation involving possible future workplace violence. The report was unfounded.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a hit-and-run collision. The driver who fled the scene was ultimately located on Aug. 31 and the report was sent to the prosecutor’s office for a charging decision.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of an agency assist regarding a mental health pickup order. The patient voluntarily went to the hospital for evaluation.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of an animal problem regarding a dog. The owner of the dog was contacted and warned for allowing it to roam freely through the neighborhood.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of an intoxicated person in the roadway. When deputies arrived they found the subject was intoxicated. Because the person was on court-ordered alcohol conditions, they were arrested and booked on a warrant.
• A Lopez deputy discovered a downed tree on a private road and alerted the road owner to alert them to the situation.
Aug. 27
• A cell phone that was found at the public library on Orcas was turned into the Sheriff’s Office.
• A deputy was dispatched to a domestic incident in the Friday Harbor area. The deputy contacted both of the involved people and determined no crime was committed.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of an act of fraud. The victim suffered no losses and there is no suspect information available.
• A deputy was dispatched to a hit-and-run in the Friday Harbor area, contacted the caller, and took photos of the damage to the vehicle. Deputies have no suspect or evidence at this time.
• An agency assist referral was requested from Adult Protective Services.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a vandalism call.
• On San Juan, deputies stopped the driver of a vehicle and issued them a citation for speeding, 43 mph in a posted 25 mph speed zone.
• Deputies on San Juan responded to a possible domestic violence incident. The investigation discovered a single person was talking loudly on their phone.
• A San Juan deputy recognized a driver who didn’t have a valid driver’s license. The driver was stopped and issued citations for not having a valid operator’s license with identification and for not having insurance.
• After receiving a report of a person passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle, a San Juan deputy noted the person was unconscious and the vehicle was in gear. The person woke up and drove a short distance before being stopped and arrested for investigation of driving under the influence.
Aug. 28
• A deputy was dispatched to a report on San Juan of an animal at large. The deputy arrived and took a dog to the animal shelter, and issued warnings to the dog’s owner.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a call about a loud explosion near North Beach Road. An investigation was conducted and what appeared to be homemade fireworks were located, but no suspect was identified.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a 911 hang-up call that turned out to be a possible assault. The incident was investigated and the deputy found the stories given were inconsistent.
• A San Juan deputy observed a known unlicensed driver operating a vehicle. The driver was stopped and arrested for not having a valid operator’s license and issued citations for not having insurance or registration in the vehicle.
Aug. 29
• A Lopez deputy and fire personnel contacted a visitor at a vacation rental about a recreational fire.
• An Orcas deputy served a person with a trespass warning letter at the request of the management for a local business.
• A deputy took possession of a lost wallet that was found on San Juan. The wallet was entered into the evidence system for safekeeping until the owner retrieves it.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a medical call. The subject was transported by EMS and a report was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for a violation of alcohol conditions.
• Orcas deputies were dispatched with Orcas Fire and Rescue to a choking call. Upon arrival, units began CPR which was performed until the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a barking dog complaint and issued the owner a verbal warning.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a complaint of harassment by one neighbor against another. The deputy spoke with the complainants and then the 45-year-old neighbor, finding the neighbor to be extremely intoxicated and equally immature.
• A Lopez resident reported their juvenile son had a tattoo applied by a local tattoo artist. Charges will be forwarded to the court for tattooing a minor.
Aug. 30
• A deputy was dispatched to a burglary in the San Juan area. The deputy contacted the owner of the business which had been broken into over the weekend. Evidence was located and taken.
• A Lopez deputy was called about a sailboat dragging anchor in the wind and threatening a dock and the vessels moored there. The unoccupied sailboat was corralled by Good Samaritan mariners and secured at the dock before anything was damaged. It is not known who owns the sailboat.
• A deputy was contacted about a traffic offense in the San Juan area. The person reported an emergency vehicle crossed the center line in a blind corner. The person had already contacted the agency involved but also reported to the Sheriff’s office.
• A Lopez deputy took a report of animal neglect regarding livestock animals. The case is under investigation.
• A Lopez deputy was sent to a call of an open 911 line. No problem was found at the location and, upon further checking, the cell phone involved was not associated with that residence. The source of the call was not located.
• A Lopez resident reported an incident of vehicle-related harassment.
Aug. 31
• A deputy was dispatched to a trespassing in the Friday Harbor area. The caller requested a trespass warning letter for a person sleeping on the property. The warning letter was signed but not served because the person in question was not on the scene.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of found property. The owner was unable to be contacted and the property was entered into evidence.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of an unwanted person making a scene at a local business regarding the mask mandate. The subject left the location before the deputy arrived.
• A deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle on San Juan because the driver did not have a valid driver’s license, was not wearing a safety belt, was using a cellphone while driving, and, on several occasions, did not use turn signals. The driver was arrested, suffered a medical episode, and was transported to the ER for treatment.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a medical assist at the jail. An inmate complained of her “heart-stopping.” Medical personnel responded and determined her heart hadn’t stopped and she was fine. She was returned to her cell.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a traffic offense that involved multiple emergency vehicles. A parked emergency vehicle was struck by another responding emergency vehicle.
• Deputies responded to a single-vehicle accident near the one-lane bridge exiting Moran State Park. The driver, who was the sole occupant and found to be driving on a suspended license, was flown off-island for medical treatment.
