The Farm to Cafeteria Program is putting on another exciting day of student culinary expertise on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Second Annual Orcas Island School District Student Chef Competition.
Every Orcas and Waldron public school student is eligible to submit entries. The Farm to Cafeteria Committee needs to receive a recipe for “the greatest sandwich, soup, dessert, casserole, meatloaf, pasta, omelet, granola, salad or taco in the world” by Jan. 14.
This year, at least one of the main items in the recipe must be obtainable from a local farm. It does not have to be in season here on Orcas at the time, but must be found from a local farm when it is in season.
Students need to submit a detailed menu that includes ingredients and cooking methods, along with a photo of the item they will be preparing in the competition (if possible and advisable) as well as a written overview of why they feel this item is appropriate, its nutritional value, its practicality as an item on the school lunch menu and any other information that will entice its selection to compete. They would also like a short biography. Be sure to include a name, grade, and contact information.
For complete information on submitting an entry and more details of the competition, go to the “Student Chef Competition” page at www.orcasislandf2c.org to download the guidelines or call or email Madie Murray at 376-3064 or gomadie@gmail.com.
