Orcas Community Participatory Agriculture is excited to host the Seed to Sprout Program, happening each Friday in September from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Turtleback Farm. This program promises to engage young learners and their families in a hands-on exploration of farming and sustainable living. The curriculum for the Seed to Sprout Program is designed to introduce young children to the wonders of agriculture.
Sept. 6: Introduction to Seeds and Soil
The journey begins with an introduction to seeds and soil, where children will discover the magic of planting and nurturing seeds. They’ll learn about soil composition and its role in plant growth, setting a solid foundation for their farming experience. Children may take some seeds to grow at home.
Sept. 13: Watering and Growth
In the second week, young farmers will delve into the importance of watering and understanding the growth process of plants. Through engaging activities, they’ll learn how to care for their plants.
Sept. 20: Garden Creatures Exploration
Week three invites children to explore the fascinating world of garden creatures. From beneficial insects to the role of pollinators, participants will discover the ecosystem that supports their garden.
Sept. 27: Harvesting and Healthy Eating
As the program concludes, children will experience the joy of harvesting their own produce. We will harvest and create a potluck feast, celebrating our season together and giving respect to the land that it grew on.
Led by WSU Master Gardener intern Vala Ross and supported by OCPA’s commitment to education, sustainability and community engagement, the Seed to Sprout Program promises to be an enriching experience for young participants. Enrollment is free for young children. Drop-ins are welcome. To learn more, email ocpa.vala@gmail.com.
