Who insures our community has needed social services, access to great cultural events, recreational opportunities, and ongoing education? Who sustains and enhances our lives every day? They are the many and the mighty: the board members.
These dedicated volunteers donate time, energy and expertise so that nonprofits are able to provide invaluable services to our community. They earn our deep appreciation and they would like you to join them.
Board service is a great way to expand interests and connect with others who share your passions. With over 70 nonprofits serving the Orcas community, there is a board opportunity that is meant for you. The basic requirement is an interest to serve, a commitment of time, including attendance at meetings (generally monthly), and a willingness to work with a group. There may even be a chance to raise money! A good way to begin your board service is to join a committee within the nonprofit to gain knowledge of the organizational culture and ensure a good fit for you. When you do find the right fit, board service is a rewarding and exciting opportunity.
The following organizations are actively seeking new board members:
The Orcas Island Historical Museum is seeking young people with an interest in history and/or community service. History is a big subject – there’s room for everyone!
Children’s House would welcome energetic board members who are dedicated to early learning and have a good sense of humor.
OPAL is looking for both board and committee members, specifically folks with an ability or interest in fundraising and for a treasurer.
Orcas Montessori Pre-School is seeking a board treasurer or member with financial background. The Orcas Island Community Foundation has room on several committees and welcomes those with a passion for community, financial acumen, and a desire to help others.
The Orcas Island Community Foundation is committed to fostering board development in order to strengthen leadership for all Orcas nonprofits. We offer ongoing Best Practice workshops and will focus on grant writing and fundraising this spring. We encourage you to consider joining a board if you are not already serving.
