San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:

Feb. 12: An apparent case of fraud nearly cost an Orcas Island woman $854 after she discovered someone used her bank account numbers to purchase merchandise at a Wal-Mart in North Carolina with a forged check. The 44-year-old’s bank refused to pay the bill, leaving the Wal-Mart in the town of Hope Mills on the hook to cover the fraudulent transaction.

A 17-year-old Lopez Island girl claims someone stole her I-pod out of a vehicle parked at the Islander Resort. The vehicle reportedly was unlocked at the time the I-pod, engraved with the term “bootylicious” and valued at $500, disappeared.

Feb. 18: An Orcas Island woman claims someone stole five bottles of prescription medication moments after she placed them on top of a newspaper stand at the ticket office at the ferry landing in Orcas Village. The bottles, which were reportedly contained inside a stocking cap at the time they vanished, and the cap, disappeared at about 9:30 a.m.

Feb. 20: An early evening, single-car collision near the intersection of Center and Lopez Sound roads prompted the arrest of a Lopez Island man for DUI. The 54-year-old, who missed a bend in the road, went over an embankment and came to a stop in thicket of overgrowth some 180 feet off the road, reportedly suffered bruises and cuts to his head. He was taken into custody at about 7:30 p.m. and treated at the island’s medical center.

Feb. 21: Two transmitters connected to a motion-detector disappeared from a Lopez Island home following an apparent theft in the 500 block of Cape St. Mary Road. Valued at $100 apiece, the transmitters vanished sometime while the homeowner was off-island.
