A single engine Piper airplane crash-landed on a private airstrip at the north end of Lopez Island on Saturday, July 16.
The pilot, a 59-year-old Lake Stevens man, was the only occupant.
“He was shaken up but otherwise uninjured,” said San Juan County Sheriff Rob Nou.
The pilot had departed from San Juan Island’s Roche Harbor Airport and was headed for Lake Stevens when the aircraft suffered complete engine failure.
“The pilot was able to make a controlled “dead stick” landing on the private airstrip, and collided with a fence once on the ground damaging the left wing of the aircraft,” said Nou. “There were no injuries and no fire.”
The initial investigation is being conducted by the sheriff’s office. The Federal Aviation Administration was notified and will conduct further investigation.
