The 10th Annual Steve Braun Memorial Triathlon brought out nearly 100 contestants on Sept. 3.
Orcas Recreation director Didier Gincig said, “It was very fun, comfortable, and a complete pleasure to be part of this great triathlon – lots of good energy and excellent effort on the beautiful course.”
“While the triathlon grows, we are able to retain a comfortable atmosphere in honor of Steve Braun. There is a good mix of locals and visitors to the island. While the event offers the opportunity for competition with others and with oneself, it is the beauty and the challenge of the course that makes this triathlon one of the favorites among triathlon participants.”
The course record now belongs to Josh Fountain, a junior at University of Washington and head of the UW triathlon club. See photo page A6.
The winner in the teams division was comprised of Suzanne Stevens, Morgan Borman, and Dave Roseberry.
The triathlon raises funds for Friends of Moran State Park and San Juan Preservation Trust; Steve Braun, who died in a kayaking accident in 1998 was very involved in both organizations. Triathlon funds also are raised for the Orcas Island Recreation Program and go towards providing a variety of year-round recreational opportunities for children, youth, and adults.
