Sustainable Living Fair May 1 on the Eastsound Village Green

The community is invited to participate in this year’s Sustainable Living Fair on Orcas Island. The fair will be held Saturday, May 1, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the Eastsound Village Green, alongside the first Farmers Market of the season.

The event, put on by the Sustainable San Juans Coordinating Committee, will present local businesses and organizations that focus on promoting environmental and economic sustainability in the island environment, and in our homes and workplaces. Organizers expect the fair will be great fun and a great opportunity for people to learn about displayers’ work and products. There will be music in the bandshell and an awards ceremony for those chosen to receive this year’s San Juan Islands Good Steward Awards (affectionately know as the “Finnies”) for leadership in sustainability in our San Juan Islands communities.

The committee requests nominations for one of these prestigious awards. 8′ x 8′ display spaces at the Fair can be reserved for a sliding scale fee based on annual business income, ranging from $25 to $50.

The first Sustainable Living Fair last May was a great success, with displayers receiving publicity online via video postings of interviews conducted with them throughout the day. (You can see those videos online at www.youtube.com/ourlittleisland). This year’s event will be in conjunction with the 3rd annual Sustainable San Juans event, which took place on San Juan Island in 2009 and on Lopez in 2008.
