Some of the island’s most cherished animal friends will be strutting their fur and feathers during the 17th annual pet parade.
Organized by Kaleidoscope as its primary fundraiser, it has become a very popular event.
“Last year we had more than 100 entries,” said Executive Director Amber Paulsen. “There are so many people who participate and it’s become so popular, it almost feels more like a community service than a fundraiser. The money part isn’t a priority for us because it is so fun.”
Pet owners of all ages are encouraged to sign up their pooches, hamsters, snakes, guinea pigs, horses, and fish for the parade on Saturday, May 23.
Participants will meet at the elementary school at 10 a.m. for judging. Parade entry fee is by donation. The fun will begin at 11 a.m., and consists of a walk through Eastsound, ending in the Village Green.
Kiwanis will sell donuts and coffee at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Frontline Call Center as part of the event.
After the parade, Kaleidoscope will have a concession stand at the farmers’ market with kid-friendly food like hot dogs, hamburgers, and snow cones.
All proceeds from the day will go towards Kaleidoscope’s operating expenses.
A total of 18 prizes will be awarded to pets, all of which have been donated by businesses. The awards include Star of the Show, Judges Choice, Best Smile, Best Trick, and Most Aerodynamic.
Everyone who enters in the parade will win something. Pawki’s is providing goodie bags for every participant.
Paulsen says that pets of any kind are accepted – they don’t even have to be real.
“We’ve had big brothers dress up little brothers and put them on a leash,” she said.
