At 7:36 a.m. on July 17, deputies responded to a report of a vehicle upside down in the pond on the corner of Mt. Baker and Terrill Beach Road on Orcas Island.
Deputies arrived to find a vehicle mostly submerged. Evidence on the scene showed the vehicle was travelling northbound on Terrill Beach Road at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway at the corner of Terrill Beach and Mt. Baker Road. The vehicle struck a dirt mound, which caused it to become airborne where it traveled approximately 91 feet through the air before impacting the ground and eventually coming to rest upside down in the lake.
The lone occupant, identified as Isaac Elijah Aragon-Smith of Yelm, Washington, was found deceased inside the vehicle. Smith had been on Orcas working at Rosario Resort for the summer. The events leading up to the accident are still being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office.
