Two projects – an inviting pathway from the school to Orcas Center and yard work with low-income seniors – will mark this year’s United Way Day of Caring (DOC), on Sept. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Day of Caring kicks off United Way’s fall fund-raising program to support more than 30 local projects with emphasis on improving early childhood assistance.
Service-club members and others will clear brush and build a safe pathway from Orcas Consolidated School to the Orcas Center, the first phase of overall landscaping that will benefit both organizations. Members of Lions, Kiwanis, and Odd Fellows, the Orcas Garden Club, and the general public will contribute to the project.
A professional service owner will donate his time to clean gutters for low-income elders. Others will help clean up seniors’ yards as part of the Day of Caring.
Youngsters from one of United Way’s member agencies will make cookies to serve the volunteers.
On San Juan Island, volunteers will clear pathways and on Lopez, work will be done around the Family Center.
