The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
Jan. 1
• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Ferry and Port Stanley roads. The driver was subsequently issued an infraction for speeding 51 mph in a posted 35 mph zone.
• Lopez deputies responded to a welfare check. An adult child took their parent’s vehicle for a ride without asking for permission. The situation resolved itself without deputy interference, as they returned home a short time later.
• San Juan Island deputies responded to a call for trespassing at a residence. The incident was documented, and a trespass warning letter was created.
Jan. 2
• A Lopez resident reported the theft of a package from a group of mailboxes near the South End Store.
• A deputy was dispatched to a welfare check in the Friday Harbor area. The person was requesting a welfare check on an unhoused person. The unhoused person was contacted and declined assistance. A report was taken.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of a residential burglary. After speaking with the reporting party, it was learned that a neighbor had electrical work done; part of the work was completed in the reporting party’s storage unit. Three trespass warning letters were issued.
• An Orcas Island deputy took a report of a vandalism to the lawn at Orcas Island High School. No suspect has been identified at the time of the report.
• A Lopez resident reported a dark brown Jeep Wrangler with numerous stickers on the rear window driving on a private road. The vehicle was not found; deputies will contact the owner of the vehicle if located.
• A deputy on San Juan Island conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle. The driver was issued infractions for operating a vehicle with no valid operator’s license and no insurance. A report was completed.
• A San Juan Island deputy responded to a sex offense call. The reporting party was not from San Juan County and the case was forwarded to the appropriate county.
Jan. 3
• An Orcas Island resident was arrested and charged with burglary in the first degree and malicious mischief after being caught inside Island Hardware and Supply at 2 a.m.
• A deputy was dispatched to a call of an unwanted person. The business owner was requesting a trespass warning letter be issued. The letter was completed and served. A report was taken.
• Lopez Deputies responded to a domestic report. An adult son engaged in a verbal argument with his mother. The incident was verbal only and had resolved itself before the deputies arrived.
Jan. 4
• A Lopez resident was issued a citation after an altercation between two dogs.
• A deputy was dispatched to a dog-at-large call in the San Juan Island area. The caller provided evidence of a dog wandering the neighborhood. The owner of the dog was issued a citation for failure to contain a potentially dangerous dog. A report was taken.
• A Lopez resident turned in a firearm for destruction.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a report of a mentally ill person boarding a ferry for the mainland. The reporting party was advised to call mainland agencies for assistance, as the ferry had already departed Lopez.
• A San Juan Island deputy stopped a vehicle for driving with registration that expired in 2018. The driver was issued infractions for failure to renew registration over two months and no insurance.
Jan. 5
• A driver on Lopez Island was issued an infraction for speeding on Fisherman Bay Road; 50 mph in a 25 mph zone.
• A deputy was dispatched to a call of a juvenile problem in the San Juan Island area. The deputy spoke with the people involved. A report was taken.
• Lopez deputies received an unfounded 911 report from a person suffering from mental health issues. The case was forwarded to Compass Health for follow-up.
• Deputies on Orcas Island responded to a domestic dispute. One of the involved was arrested for malicious mischief – domestic violence.
Jan. 6
• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a welfare check. The resident had not been heard from in one week. The resident was found deceased. An investigation was conducted, and no suspicious circumstances were found.
• A Lopez resident reported landlord-tenant violations. Suggestions were offered, and a report was taken.
• A Lopez man was trespassed from a village business after making inappropriate comments to a female employee.
• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to a noncriminal dispute between family members. A report was completed.
Jan. 7
• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a domestic violence incident. An investigation was conducted, and one was arrested for felony domestic violence charges.
• A Lopez Island deputy was dispatched to a vandalism call. The reporting party advised that they had just smashed a vehicle window for the fun of it. The vehicle belonged to the caller’s dad. The incident was investigated and documented.
• A deputy on Orcas Island responded to a littering complaint. An investigation commenced and is ongoing.
• A deputy on Orcas Island conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a notice of infraction for speeding, 47 mph in a 25 mph zone.
• Lopez Island deputies were dispatched to an agency assist, mental health Department of Social and Health Services pickup order. An individual was later taken into protective custody and transported to Peace Island Medical Center for further care. The incident was documented.
