Secretary of State Sam Reed is reminding Washington citizens that Saturday, July 19, is the last day for them to do mail-in or online voter registration in order to vote in the August 19 Primary election.
July 19 is also the deadline for registered voters in Washington to transfer their registration information if they have moved to a new address within the state. Registered voters who had a name change should also update their registration records.
“The August 19 Primary will be a very important election for Washington voters,” Reed said. “It’s the first time that our state’s voter-approved Top 2 Primary system will be used, so there will be several key races on the ballot. If people want their candidates to be on the November ballot, they need to be sure they are registered and then vote in the upcoming Primary.”
Citizens with a Washington State driver’s license or Washington State ID card may register online at www.vote.wa.gov or at https://wei.secstate.wa.gov/onlinevoterregistration/Registration.aspx.
Voter registration forms are available in English, Chinese, Spanish, Cambodian, Korean, Laotian, Russian and Vietnamese. Forms can be downloaded at www.secstate.wa.gov/elections/register.aspx.
To register to vote in the state of Washington, someone must be:
• a citizen of the United States;
• a legal resident of Washington State;
• at least 18 years old by Election Day; and
• not presently denied his or her civil rights due to a felony conviction.
Federal and State law require citizens to provide identification to register to vote, such as a Washington driver’s license or Washington ID card. If someone does not have a state driver’s license or ID card, other ID forms are valid under the law.
Reed pointed out that Washington’s registered voters do not have to reregister to vote in each election.
“The upcoming deadline is strictly for those people who have not registered to vote in our state or who have moved within the state and want to vote in their new jurisdiction,” Reed said.
August 4 is the last day for citizens currently not registered to vote in Washington to register in person at their County Auditor’s office. Location information for each County Auditor is available on the Internet by going to: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/elections/auditors.aspx.
As of late June, there are about 3.4 million registered voters in Washington.
