MONDAY

Duplicate Bridge Every Monday at 7 p.m. at the Longhouse in Eastsound duplicate bridge. For details call 376-2797 or 376-8278.

Chess The Orcas Chess Club meets at Eastsound Library at 3:30 p.m., every Monday afternoon. Members age five to 105 with exceptions at both ends are welcome. Contact Phil Heikkinen at the library for details.

Al-Anon The Al-Anon group on Orcas meets at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Parish Hall to the right of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Al-Anon is for friends and family of alcoholics.

Open Mic The Lower Tavern has open mic night weekly starting at 7:30 p.m. Jaen Black will host the event. Everyone is welcome.

WEDNESDAY

Theosophical Library Indralaya’s Theosophical Library is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. The theosophical discussion group also meets at Indralaya from 7:30 to 9 p.m. For info call 376-4526 or email indralaya@indralaya.com.

Open Mic Pizza Night A weekly benefit at Doe Bay Resort Cafe with a different nonprofit organization chosen to benefit each month. Dinner served from 6 to 10 p.m. and the Open Mic starting between 7 and 8 p.m.

Blood pressure check-up There is a free blood pressure check-up between 10 a.m. and noon at the Orcas Island Medical Clinic. No appointment is needed.

SATURDAY

Ping Pong The Orcas Table Tennis Association plays at the Orcas Christian School gym. The table tennis games run from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the West Beach Resort, and there is a $2 admission charge to help pay for rental fees. For more info, call Jamey Hanse at 376-2240.

Friday, March 6

Zimbabwean music at Oddfellows Community potluck at 6 p.m. Local musicians will perform marimba and special guest James Mujuru of Zimbabwe will perform traditional Mbira pieces.

Battlefield Band The Battlefield Band, straight from Scotland, will perform on Friday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Orcas Center. Prior to the performance “Burgers and Brews” will be available in the Madrona Room, courtesy of the Lower Tavern.

Saturday, March 7

Drawing for the Uncertain Artist Caroline Buchanan will teach hand and eye coordination with contour drawing, how to change three-dimensions to two and how to “see as an artist.” The class is from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the senior center with a break for lunch. Saturday, March 7

Free composting workshop Learn to compost food/yard waste to build healthy, productive soil. Get ideas for managing brush piles as wildlife habitat. Purchase a composter at a reduced cost! From 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Orcas Island Senior Center. Call 370-0503 for more information.

Mt. Constitution Stair Climb Challenge The Orcas Island Volunteer Fire/EMS Association will be stepping up to the challenge. Volunteers will be attempting to climb Mt. Constitution one step at a time in an effort to raise money to benefit the Mercy Flight Program, the David Fisher family and Jordan Griffin. Come by Island Market starting at 8 a.m. and make a pledge of support.

Karaoke The Lower Tavern will be hosting a karaoke night starting at 9 p.m.

Orcas Center annual meeting The annual meeting of the Orcas Center membership will be held at 1 p.m.

Book Club Darvill’s Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. at Darvill’s. This month’s book is “The Reader” by Bernard Schlink (available at Darvill’s). All are welcome.

Tuesday, March 10

Orcas Island Camera Club The Camera Club will meet in the Lundeen Room of the Senior Center on starting at 7 p.m. This month’s meeting will include a class on lighting for portraits, a presentation on validating good photography, and a quick editing session on improving an image submitted by a member. Community dinner The last community dinner for 2009 will be held at Orcas Christian School from 5 to 8 p.m. Heather Thomas, Bilbo’s chef, will be preparing a free all-you-can eat Mexican feast. On the menu are cheese enchiladas, black bean casserole, refried beans, Spanish rice, burritos, Mexican slaw, green salad, chips and salsa, ice cream and biscotti.

Marine lecture The Orcas Island Marine Science Lecture Series presents “Steller sea lions – grizzlies of the sea” with Steve Jeffries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The program begins at 7 p.m. at the Camp Orkila Marine Salmon Center. The lecture is free. Please park in the upper parking lot at Camp Orkila. Shuttle service from the parking lot to the talk is available before and after the lecture.

Orcas Choral Society The Orcas Choral Society will present the “Requiem” by Gabriel Faure’ on Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m. at the Orcas Island Community Church located at 176 Madrona Street in Eastsound. Admission to the concert is free but donations are welcome.
