1939 – 2022
Elizabeth Irene Roberts, 83, passed peacefully to heaven on September 19, 2022. Her daughter and granddaughter were at her side.
Beth, as she was known to everyone, was born on July 27, 1939 in Plattsburgh, New York to Robert Joseph Linney and Irene Jette Linney.
Beth married Bill Hamel in 1957. They had four children. Beth was a devoted mother and was very involved with their activities, volunteering as room mother, Girl Scout leader, and driving countless miles as their chauffeur.
An avid gardener and blessed with a green thumb, Beth and her second husband, Bill Roberts, owned a landscape business in Arizona. She became a talented landscape designer.
In the early 1990s Beth moved to Orcas Island. She worked at Rosario Resort, Island Market, delivered newspapers for the Islands’ Sounder and worked as a barista at Kiki’s where she enjoyed serving coffee to all her regular customers. Beth often said she was the “Richest woman on Orcas Island” because of all of the friends she had there. Generous to a fault, she was always donating to charities and helped anyone she knew who was in need. Beth especially had a compassion for all of God’s creatures.
Beth met her very special friend, Jim Newland, when they worked together at Rosario. Beth and Jim were together for more than 20 years and enjoyed each other’s company until Jim passed in 2018.
Beth is missed by her children, Liz, Mary Lynn (Mike), Bill (Ellen) and Tracy, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren (one on the way) and 1 great great grandchild (one on the way). Beth was predeceased by her parents, sister Mary Ducatte, brother Joseph Linney, husband Bill Roberts and beloved companion Jim Newland. Beth is survived by her brother Bill Linney.
Anyone wishing to honor her life is encouraged to donate to an animal welfare charity. Please go to https://www.forevermissed.com/elizabeth-irene-roberts/lifestory to share memories of Beth for her family and to read more about her life.
