Gloria Jean (Quilliam) Johnson | Passages

Gloria Jean (Quilliam) Johnson died peacefully at her daughter’s home on January 27, 2025. Gloria spent the last two years being cared for by her Granddaughter Brandi and daughter Corinne, along with numerous Hospice personal. Gloria was born on December 23, 1929, in Baker, Montana to John and Marvel (Hill) Quilliam. The family resided in southwest North Dakota. Following her early years in Slope County, she traveled with her family to Rochester, Minnesota where her father worked at a livery stable.Living the adventurous life of a rancher’s daughter, Gloria found the freedom she loved on the back of a horse. She had fond memories of time spent with her father on horseback, especially when she was able to perform the Quadrill with family and friends at the Killdeer Mountain Roundup Rodeo when it was still located in Oakdale at the base of the Killdeer Mountains.

When Gloria was eleven, the family moved to a ranch northwest of the Killdeer Mountains. Here, she worked alongside her father on the ranch, attending the country school just up the hill. During her high school years, she boarded in Killdeer with the Duhlum family. Graduating from Killdeer High School. In August of 1948, Gloria married James Bang, and they lived on the home ranch in the old Erickson farmstead. She and Jim welcomed daughters Susan, Corinne and son, Morris (Morey). The family eventually moved to Killdeer where they owned and operated the Lazy L Motel and the Killdeer Hide and Fur. In 1965, Gloria and the children moved to Bismarck where Gloria obtained her cosmetology degree. Then, in 1967, she and the children moved to Seattle, WA where Gloria worked as a hair stylist, opening her own salon 1969 -1977

Gloria moved to Orcas Island, Washington in 1977 where she owned and operated the Island Beauty Nook. She married Harold Johnson on May 4, 1979, and they spent many happy years residing on the island. Gloria and Harold loved fishing and boating on the Misty J and were always up for boating trips with friends. After they both retired, they devoted much of their time traveling in their RV. They loved to summer in North Dakota, spending time with family and friends while helping her daughter manage the Circle C Gallery and Gift in Medora. In the winter, they would travel South.

Gloria always had time for friends and family. Her door was always open, and she welcomed one and all for happy hour or a meal. She loved to play bridge, puzzles, craft, dance, shop, exercise, out for dinner! The epitome of a lady, Gloria kept a smile on her face and her lipstick fresh!

She is survived by her daughters Susan (Ron Toroni), Corinne Davis, son Morey (Tracie), stepson Gary Johnson, stepdaughter Nancy Johnson and grandchildren Eric Lucia, Adam, Paul Toroni, Brad and Brandi Skachenko, (Steven), Tanner and Levi Bang (Shauna), and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by niece Julee (Duane Gartner), and nephews Gene (Gynell) and John (Janis) Harris. Her many great nieces and nephews called her Gramma Glo and loved her dearly.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Donna, brother-in-law Darcy Harris, husband Harold and son-in-law Con Davis.

Family asks for donations to Hospice of the Northwest.

A service will be held on Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church in Eastsound followed by a reception at the American Legion.
