Raymond Smith was born in Seattle on May 16, 1926 and passed away on April 29, 2006.
He graduated from Cleveland High School in 1944 and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He attended Washington State University and Central Washington University, earning several athletic and scholastic awards. He married his wife Joanne (Yeoman), had two children, and graduated with a B.A. in education in 1950. Ray taught and coached football at Foster, Renton, Highline and Evergreen high schools between 1950 and 1968. From 1968 to 1985 he owned and operated two successful businesses.
In 1985 he moved to Orcas Island where he taught, was the athletic director, and finally retired. Ray composed his life around his family, friends, sports, fishing, boating, and the outdoors with compassion, integrity, and curiosity.
It is with great love and respect that his family — Joanne Smith, Gayle Smith, Terry Smith, Sara Smith, John Wade, Terra Campbell, Darrin Campbell and Ryland Aldrich — thank him.
A memorial service will be held on May 20 at 2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Everett.
