After decades of living, they have some of the richest stories to tell. They’ve lived through wars, watched presidents come and go, traveled the globe, sent children off to college, and welcomed grandchildren into the world.
So you’d think we’d all be clamoring to hear their wisdom. But sadly, our seniors are often overlooked.
Which is why the local senior centers are so vital.
“If it wasn’t here, they wouldn’t have a place to go,” Jane Heisinger, assistant to the Orcas Senior Advisory Committee, said. “It’s their social life, a place where they can meet with their friends, have a meal, and share a laugh. They feel comfortable here.”
A healthy portion of the Orcas Senior Center’s budget comes from donations and fundraising. One of its major events, the Holiday Festival of the Arts, did not do as well as expected.
“We didn’t meet our $8,000 goal,” Heisinger said.
Which is why we are asking the community to help in any way they can. We are so generous with the food bank, toys for tots, and more, but the seniors need our support as well.
Twice a week the center provides lunch to as many as 80 seniors. Every Tuesday they receive free foot care. Volunteers bring meals to those who can’t make it into town and drive elders to doctor appointments on the mainland. And every Tuesday after lunch, the Orcas Senior Center Songbirds can be heard practicing their harmonizing.
The senior center is also a spot for community meetings and events. A new art exhibit is on display each month, which brings in people of all ages.
The Hearts and Hands program joined the senior center last January, and has seen a rise in the number of seniors it assists. Volunteers do everything from sharing their time in friendly conversation, light housekeeping, providing transportation, and shopping. These services can be a major factor in allowing our elderly to live independent lives.
If you can’t give money, consider giving a little time. Hearts and Hands is always in need of volunteers. Call 376-7723 or email heartsandhands@orcasonline.com.
There are so many causes that are worthy of our time and money, especially during this time of year. While we strongly support them all, we feel the seniors deserve special recognition. They are a valuable thread in our community tapestry.
Thanks to the OCS kids
The Orcas Christian School kids once again delivered homemade cookies to businesses and organizations around town. We thank them for their generosity and holiday spirit.
