There are many possible explanations for the generosity of Orcas Islanders – a strong sense of community, a giving spirit, philanthropy as a way of life – but we think there is a little magic involved too.
How else can a community (one that is being hit by hard times just like the rest of the country) provide enough donations for 29 programs to receive grants that total $81,00?
The Orcas Island Community Foundation held its annual grant awards ceremony in early June, and recipients ran the gamut from children’s services to senior citizen assistance to nature programs.
One non-profit representative called the process “magical.” Another wept at the generosity of Orcas high school seniors, who every year are tasked with doling out $5,000 from OICF to local groups. This year, it all went to Orcas Family Connections, a tiny organization that provides critical help – like finding food, shelter, and clothing – to island families.
Another wondrous aspect of the foundation’s work: the connectivity of island non-profits. For example, Orcas Montessori, which received money for operating expenses, also benefits from the work of Orcas Family Connections and the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival preschool music program, another grant recipient. Giving to one organization can enrich the offerings of another group. And on, and on, and on.
Since we’re on a roll with this theme here, check out this year’s One World Music Festival, June 18 and 19 at Orcas Center. It’s two nights of world-class music and magic performances. And, not surprisingly, it all benefits a local nonprofit: The Funhouse.
We’re proud of Orcas Island, and its seemingly bottomless magic hat. Who knows what we’ll pull out next, but we can be sure it will benefit our community in a very real way.
