Parks and Rec District – yes; Fireworks Ban – yes

Parks and Rec District

Say yes to the formation of the Orcas Parks and Rec District. It’s time we had our own taxing district managed by our own community. It pains us to write about the Orcas Rec Program possibly being eliminated by lack of money. Voting yes means that the district will be created and managed by a set of five elected commissioners who will canvass the community, set out goals, and put a levy before the voters at a later date. We have a rich variety of recreation opportunities on our island – let’s keep them intact for generations to come.

Fireworks ban

We are always in favor of doing everything possible to prevent a fire. In that regard, we think the Fireworks Referendum on this November’s ballot is a winner – but it’s paramount that the sheriff’s office can enforce it.

Referendum 2008-2 asks voters to approve or reject a county ordinance banning the possession and/or use of safe and sane fireworks in San Juan County. As it stands now, safe and sane fireworks are only allowed on certain hours on July 4th.

Yet how many of us hear fireworks going off well before and after that date? And how many of the fireworks we hear are ONLY safe and sane? Something tells us there are illegal fireworks making their way to our islands.

If the new ban is approved, it must be enforceable. If it’s not possible to catch people using illegal fireworks, then this referendum is just something for the books.

Fire Chief Mike Harris said at last week’s candidate forum that some of the worst injuries he has seen were on children hurt by fireworks. We agree that fireworks can cause bodily harm and start outdoor fires – which is why we can’t stress enough how important it is to hold the community accountable. Fireworks are fun when used safely. Unfortunately, some of us are irresponsible, and because of the fire danger they present and the physical harm they can cause, San Juan County should support a year-round ban.
