After decades of running the Orcas Food Bank, Dave and Lina McPeake and Judy Hughes have stepped down from the board.
On Jan. 5, Lina and Dave (president and vice president) and Judy (secretary/treasurer) resigned. Larry and Joyce Shaw are replacing the McPeakes as heads of the board.
On behalf of the thousands of island families who have frequented the food bank over the last 25 years, we thank these three tireless volunteers. Because of your efforts – and many generous donors – the island’s struggling seniors and young families have not gone hungry.
Watch for a full story on the McPeakes, Judy, and the history of the food bank in the next edition of the Sounder.
A reminder: the food bank is held every Tuesday in the basement of Orcas Island Community Church on Madrona Street in Eastsound from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome. There are no questions asked and if someone is in need but cannot make it in to town, occasionally food will be delivered to them.
The church also has a bulletin board at the food bank where community members can post information about job openings, free items, and more. Pastor Dick Staub says a family recently received a brand new dryer from someone who no longer needed it.
