On Tuesday, April 28, Friday Harbor was on fire for the fairways and shot an overall 196 strokes to Orcas’ 226, winning the golf game on a sunny, calm spring day.
“Our medalist was Taylor Diepenbrock. He shot a 37, despite a double bogie and a bogie. His swing has come right around where it should be, and I can’t emphasize what a good thing that is,” Coach Bobby Olmsted commented.
Henry Bredouw of Orcas also shot well, coming in with a 40, and Alan Coe with a 44. Chris Ghazel shot a 54.
For the women, Cetacea Stanton shot a 49, and Maddy Smith came in with a 51.
Friday Harbor came ready to play and they played very well. Cody Price from Friday Harbor was low with a 37, Jordan Taylor shot a 38 and Dustin Howard of San Juan shot a 39.
“All of their top five players, shot 42 and lower. The Friday Harbor Coach, Brian St. Jermaine, has a lot to be proud of,” Olmsted said.
“It was a great day, the weather was perfect. We were playing with a new course layout and some of our players played well, but just had some tough breaks. Our whole team, immediately after practice, went down and started working at the driving range that recently was finished at the Orcas golf course.”
Orcas has only one more match left to play in which players can qualify for district. This last game is against La Conner.
“We have one slot left, the seventh slot, and whoever plays well enough will get that seventh spot. They would probably play as an alternate. My top six players are Henry, Alan, Taylor, Joel Boucher, Spencer Sare, and Miles McClosky,” Olmsted commented.
The next golf game for Orcas is on Monday, May 4 at La Conner. Coming up on Thursday are the league championships, which will be held at the San Juan Golf Course at 12:00 p.m. The following week begins district championships.
