Lady Vikings have rollercoaster of a week

The Lady Vikings had a topsy-turvy week, playing first Squalicum, a huge 2A school just for the challenge of playing a much larger team, and losing to Squalicum 19-6.

“We intentionally scheduled the game to challenge us,” Coach Scott Harris said. “We were leading them; then we had an unfortunate player injury (Brooke Bruland and a runner collided at first base) so that took the emotional wind out of our sails. It was a good day that had an unfortunate story line by the end of the game.”

On Thursday the Lady Vikings came out to play bruised but determined. Friday Harbor, however, had other plans. They had learned their lesson from a double header against Orcas two weeks ago. The Lady Vikings fell 5-0 to Friday Harbor.

Harris said, “Their defense was just so good and tight…the infield and outfield players’ teamwork to their credit was really good. We tried to go to a small ball game, but we just couldn’t manufacture runs. Hats off to Friday Harbor for their crisp no-error playing.”

At Concrete on Friday though, the Lady Vikings found their stride not once but twice. Adria Garcia was on fire at the pitcher’s mound and the ladies recovered strongly and kept up their even-handed base hitting throughout the double header at Concrete. The Lady Vikings were victorious twice in that double header 19-9, and 19-2 against Concrete.

“We had a great day. Everybody was involved and hit the ball well. I would like to commend one of my assistant coaches, Jim Passer. He’s our hitting coach and he really had the girls dialed in and ready to go after a good week of practice. Our third base coach, Jason Nichlos, also called a great game offensively.”

The Lady Vikings play Darrington this Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. in a double header at Buck Park.
