On Monday, April 6 the Orcas softball team won 12-2 against the Concrete Lady Lions in five innings.
“We had to invoke the ten run rule,” Coach Scott Harris said. “Our team was firing on all pistons and in the state of Washington, if a team is ahead by ten runs within five innings, the referees can call the game. It creates a better playing environment for all players concerned.”
Adria Garcia started in the circle pitching for the Lady Vikings.
“We had a slow
start,” Harris commented. “Concrete scored two runs in the first inning while our pitcher got fully into it, and then Adria got her game on and had 13 strikeouts in five innings. She was able to stay focused and in the groove. I really love to see players dial in and work on their focus throughout a game. She did a really good job in the circle for us that day.”
The Lady Vikings had only one error defensively in five innings of play. Orcas had 10 base hits overall, and 10 steals as a team to advance on the bases. The Concrete Lady Lions walked 10 players throughout and Orcas took advantage of the walks, capitalizing on single base hits, thus loading the bases. Orcas was very efficient at getting single hits and methodically running players home across the plate.
“A theme of our games this season is the complete contribution by all the players. We had no extra bases, or doubles, but everyone got on base, and everyone got hits,” Harris said. “It makes a team really strong when anywhere in the lineup I can rely on the next person up at bat to get us going in the right direction.
“It takes a lot of focus and the desire to work hard to maintain concentration when a team gets behind early on. These players can do that. They know how to dial in as a group and stay dialed in.”
The Orcas softball team’s next game is against Friday Harbor on Saturday afternoon, April 18.
“The Friday Harbor Lady Wolverines are very strong in our league, and they will present a real battle for us in league play.”
